About the city of
Porto and its region
Porto is the
largest city of Northern Portugal. The Historic Center of Porto,
classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, is one of the most attractive
entertainment venues for visitors, providing a rich variety of
monuments and ordinary dwelling, from different periods stretching
back as far as the 14th century. In 2001, Porto has been an
European Capital of Culture.
The city of Porto and its river,
Douro, cannot be dissociated. The Douro valley, with its lovely
terraces of vineyards clinging to the hillsides, is the kingdom of
the famous Port Wine and offers visitors spectacular views.
The
Metropolitan Area of Porto is the main center of the northern region,
which in turn occupies a top ranking position in the European
regions, concerning employment. In this region are located the
headquarters of many important industries, like jewellery, textile
industry, shoe industry, furniture industry, automotive parts
industry, chemical and steel industries, among others.
From
the science point of view, the Metropolitan Area of Porto has various
Universities (the University of Porto is the largest of Portugal),
Polytechnics, R&D and Professional Institutes that cover all
areas of study.
How
to get to
Porto
The city of Porto is easily
accessible from abroad. Several airlines offer service to Francisco
Sá Carneiro International Airport, situated
about 12 Km from the City Center. Please contact the Abreu

agency if you need help to get to Porto.
From the
airport to the hotels, you can take a taxi, use the bus service, or the
Metro.
There are taxis available just outside the airport terminal.
Taxi fares to the City Center costs near 15€.
The bus
service
nº 602,
just outside airport runs every 15 minutes. The journey to the
City
Center costs about 1,35€ and takes about 1 hour.
If you choose the Metro, you have several options, depending on your
final destination. If your destination station is Casa da Música the
trip time is around 22 minutes. If you choose the city
downtown Trindade the trip time
is near 28 minutes. The single travel ticket costs 1,35 €.
If you
arrive at Porto by train (Campanhã
Railway Station) it is better to take a taxi.The cost is about
8€.
If you
drive from Lisbon to Porto, there is the A1 motorway. The
distance between the two cities is 310km. Choose the signs
”ARRÁBIDA”
to cross the Arrábida bridge and leave the motorway to
“Porto
Campo Alegre” direction. You come to a junction with traffic
lights
after a few hundred meters. Almost
all the recommended hotels are nearby.

of the 601, ZA, 602 and 604 Line link various parts
of the
city to the airport.
