About
U.PORTO and FEUP
The University
of Porto
(U.PORTO) was founded on the 22nd
of March 1911, basically as a result of the union of Porto's 19th
century higher education schools, which themselves stemmed from
institutions of the previous century. Nowadays the University of Porto
is the largest university in Portugal with about 28.000 students. About
55 1st cycle degrees and more than 100 2nd and 3rd cycle degrees are
offered in all major fields of study. The University employs more than
2.000 teachers and 1.700 technical and administrative staff.
The Faculdade
de
Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) is a leading
institution
of international reputation whose achievements in research and
teaching have established itself in the forefront of the universities
of engineering.
The Faculty is committed to the highest
standards of education, in furtherance of its mission to advance
learning and knowledge, preparing professional engineers at an
international level. It is the largest Faculty of the U.PORTO, with
about 5,700 students and more than 400 lecturers, of which about two
thirds hold a doctoral degree.
U.PORTO carries out
high quality research in all fields of study and offers excellent
conditions for researchers to develop their activities, with many
research centres and laboratories.
U.PORTO provides
researchers with a grid infrastructure to support e-Science. The
Grid infra-structure at U.PORTO is composed by three grid clusters,
totalizing 96 CPUs, managed by the Engineering
(FEUP) and Science
Faculties (FCUP) and by the Institute
of Common Resources and
Initiatives of the University (IRICUP).
GridU.PORTO
is part
of the EGEE (Enabling
Grids for E-sciencE)
infrastructure.
